The Group ry
What is The Group ry?
The Group ry is a non-profit organization registered in Finland. With all of our members as organizers, we run online-tournaments and lan-parties in Finland for Finnish players. Our crew consists of skillful and motivated project leaders, graphicians, programmers and many others. In addition to our own events, we distribute equipment, know-how and even funds to new, emerging and similar organizations.
Our Mission
As we have stated in our rules (entire rulebook here, in Finnish), our mission is to:
- Enhance togetherness of computer enthusiasts
* Inspire involved people to develop their own digital creation
* Develop the IT-knowledge and group-spirit of our members
In practice, this means organizing excellent events and helping others to do the same. That is to say: we will gladly offer our assistance and equipment to other similar organizations in Finland.
History of The Group
Rough changes and reorganization in the Finnish Day of Defeat scene in early 2004 inspired the creation of an online-tournament organizer, seeing running excellent leagues and tournaments as its mission. Press releases were made on March 14th, which is still our official birthday. After those days, The Group has changed its form and main activity through and through. Currently, Jarmo Keto is the only original member left in the line-up, having worked as the leader of the organization uninterruptedly since its ascension.
As lan-organizing began to take its role as the primary activity of The Group in 2005, the number of members has grown rapidly due to increased need for workforce. Many events were still ran undercrewed, as the organization set strict limits and requirements for all of its members. However, public image for the The Group increased dramatically these years, as new affiliates and sponsors, such as the Youth department of Helsinki, Pulju.net and Secvia, began actively and loyally supporting the organization.
The Group began democratizing itself in late 2006, when it was registered to Finnish register authorities and tax administration VAT-register. This rapid era of changes is called the anti-Ketonizing of The Group. As so often when sturdy organization faces such changes, problems occurred due to immature democracy.
Today The Group ry consists of nearly 30 active members. All the members are still hand-picked, and we still value will to learn and high level of motivation above all other aspects: one thing you can't learn is attitude. Our members represent the top level skill and know-how in lan-event and professional gaming tournament organizing, and we constantly work in various other events, offering our skills and know-how there. Last year a major part of the Assembly GameCrew consisted of our members.
